A new recording of “God Is Working His Purpose Out”, a rousing hymn with words by Arthur Campbell Ainger (1841 – 1919), an English lyricist and schoolmaster at Eton College, which might explain much of its tone. It is set to the tune “Benson” by Millicent D. Kingham (1866 – 1927), a South African composer. Very piece much of its time, with its echos of militant missionaries at the peak of British Empire, but still relevant today.
